SHIRLEY ELLEN BASSETT, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully in Raymond, AB on Sunday February 22, 2026 at the age of 85 years.

Shirley was born in Carmangay, Alberta in 1940 to Albert and Mildred Erickson. She was the 4th of 8 children. Shirley’s father worked for the CPR and her early years were spent living in section houses across various communities in Southern Alberta.

Shirley was a loving and devoted mother to her 3 sons, Greg, Doug and Rick. She dedicated her early adult life to raising and caring for “her boys”. Shirley was a hockey mom and spent many winters at the rink. She was also a loving, caring grandmother and great grandmother.

Shirley remained close with all of her siblings throughout her life, and cherished the reunions and holidays they were able to share together.

Shirley worked for Trans Alta Utilities for many years. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi for decades and enjoyed time spent with her sorority sisters.

Shirley loved to garden and preserve the fruits of her labour for her family and friends. She was known for her beautiful crocheted afghans, and famous for her delicious fondant chocolates.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Greg (Tracy) Bassett and son, Rick (Kerry) Bassett, granddaughter, Sara (Chris, Gavin and Maden) Szentes and grandson, Mason (Christine and Reese) Bassett.

She is survived by her sisters Audrey (Ross) Walker, Arlene Ell, Marge (Casey) Rinkel, Nora Revak, Linda (Allan) Herbst and Donna (Ray) Block and sister-in-law Audrey Erickson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mildred Erickson, brother Herb Erickson, and son Doug Bassett.

The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritans in Raymond and the staff at the Raymond Hospital for the love and care provided in her last years

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 27, 2026 at Salmon and Sons Funeral Home, 433 Stubb Ross Rd S, Lethbridge.
