James Fisher Obituary

JAMES LOUIS FISHER ("JIM") passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at the age of 79 years, with his wife and daughters by his side.
Beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa and friend, Jim passed away  peacefully in Lethbridge on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the age of 79.

Born to the late Louis and Olive Fisher on June 7, 1943, Jim was raised in Raymond, Alberta. Brainy and athletic, he played basketball for the Raymond Comets, and was valedictorian of his high school class. At U of A, Jim studied mathematics and played center for the basketball team. When Jim met Beth Conrad, he was quickly smitten. They married in 1964.
Jim and Beth headed to Los Angeles, where Jim earned a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1968. The couple's three children were born in California, Alberta, and England. After a stint as a math professor at U of A, Jim decided to try his hand at farming near Warner.

Life on the farm kept Jim and Beth busy with the million jobs of tending crops and livestock along with kids, while battling the elements and market prices.
In the eighties, Jim's gift for numbers and analysis led him to start an investment club, the Fisher Private Fund, where he managed the stocks of several dozen members to good effect.
A legendary gamester, Jim often trounced his family and friends at Scrabble,  Solitaire, Spoons, and more. He had a special place in his heart for Go, an Asian board game of strategy adored by cerebral number-crunching tacticians.

Jim held callings in his LDS ward and went on a mission to Montreal with Beth. After retirement, Jim and Beth moved to the house of their dreams in Lethbridge; and traveled all over the world, from Alaska, to the Great Barrier Reef, to the Holy Land. They cherished their crop of fair-haired grandchildren, and enjoyed a brisk social schedule. Their happy marriage lasted for more than 50 years, until Beth passed away in 2015.

Jim was lonely without Beth. After a time, he dated Conny Schipper, and the couple was wed in 2016. Conny and Jim shared a lively life, filled with laughter, meals, and outings with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife, Conny Schipper; his children, Carolyn Fisher (Steve Arthur), Michael Fisher, and Kathryn (Josh) Molcak; his grandchildren, Geneva (John) Fisher Stout, Kieran Arthur, Riley Molcak, Avery Molcak; his sister, Wylene McConkie; and his step children and step grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beth Conrad Fisher; his sisters, Shirley Fisher Smith and Connie Fisher Pitcher Shields; and his parents, Lou Fisher and Olive Parkinson Fisher.

Jim was a brilliant mind, a doting grandpa and a kind friend. He loved to tease by taking the opposite point of view in any debate – no matter what his REAL opinion was. We are shedding tears for Jim Fisher, but we are laughing, too,  because he was fun, and funny, and fiercely competitive, and smart, and sweet, and generous. He will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at 11:00am on August 31, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FAIRMONT CHAPEL (205 Fairmont Blvd S, Lethbridge); and interment to follow at the Raymond Temple Hill Cemetery.
