Jack William Chalmers was born on July 20, 1931, in Lethbridge, Alberta, where he spent most of his youth. What began as a photographic hobby soon became his profession. He worked as a photographer and engraver for the Lethbridge Herald.

After returning from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack pursued professional photography for 15 years, first in Lethbridge and later in Edmonton. While in Edmonton, he met and married Maleta Yvonne Carter. This year, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised five children.

Jack returned to Lethbridge to join the first classes at the new University of Lethbridge, graduating in 1971. Following graduation, he taught at Hamilton Jr. High for 23 years. In 1985, he trained as an Emergency Medical Technician and served for 18 years as a volunteer firefighter/EMT with Coaldale Emergency Services. Over 25 years, he taught countless First Aid and CPR courses through Lethbridge Community College, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and St. John Ambulance. His contributions were recognized with the Order of St. John Medal, the Alberta Centennial Medal, and his investiture as a Serving Brother in the Order of St. John.

Jack was also deeply dedicated to Scouting, serving for 25 years in Edmonton and Lethbridge as a Cub leader, Scoutmaster, and Assistant District Commissioner. He was honored with the 20-Year Service Medal.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack served faithfully in many roles, including three missions—one with his wife—as well as service as a temple worker. His greatest wish was simply that his presence made a difference.

Jack passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025, in Lethbridge, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children, Ken of Smithfield, Utah; Dave (Callee) of Welling; Monica (Dan) Petersen of West Bountiful, Utah; Jacquie (Wayne) Pierson of Los Alamitos, California; and Wayne (YuLian) of Edmonton. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren (including spouses), 52 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Chalmers; mother, Edythe Jacobs; stepfather, Richard Osterberg; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Iris Chalmers; great-granddaughters, Ariella and Everly Bjornn; and daughter-in-law, Kaylene Chalmers.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the specialists, doctors, nurses, and staff at Chinook Regional Hospital and St. Michael’s Palliative Care Center for their compassionate care and support.

A visitation with the family will be held Thursday, August 28, from 7:00–8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Magrath Cemetery on Friday, August 29, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Coaldale chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2216–21A Avenue.

As Jack’s life was marked by church and community service, the family asks that those who wish to honor him consider making a donation to one of the following: Church Humanitarian Services, Coaldale and District Emergency Services, Canada Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Diabetes Canada, or a charity of your choice.
