Hugh John Hill slipped peacefully into eternity holding his sweetheart’s hand on May 7th, 2025. He was 78 years young and had battled cancer bravely for many years with his family close and his humour intact. Hugh was born September 21st, 1946 in Balham, London, England to Rosina Maud Newbury and James Patrick Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Iris Hill (nee Martin), his older brother Michael of Seaford, Essex, UK and his four children (Debbie Coates [Trevor], Jonathan Hill [Carrie], Stephen Hill [Terri] and Gillian Spencer [Robert]), thirteen grandchildren (Sarah Marsh [Nick], Tim Coates [Maren], Hannah Thiessen [Brandon], Sina Kastendieck [Joe], Emma Iris Hill, Ian Hill, Naomi Hill, Thomas Hill [Robin], Harrison Hill, Mel Spencer, Abigail Neves [Emanuel], Bradley Spencer [Alaura], Meghan Hamilton [Andrew]), and seven great-grandchildren (Aurora Thiessen, Ryder Thiessen, Carson Marsh, Bram Kastendieck, Ellie Spencer, Orwell Kastendieck, Eli Marsh).

Hugh was a licensed mechanic when he and Pauline moved with two small children to Raymond, Alberta in 1970. They established a home filled with love and added two more children in 1971 and 1974. He worked various jobs over the years before becoming a student in the early 80s at the University of Lethbridge and earning a degree in Education with an Art minor. He loved teaching and substitute taught for many years without ever attaining a permanent teaching position. But what he did for a living never really mattered to Hugh as long as he could provide for his family whether that meant fixing bikes, servicing cars, commuting to Taber, or cleaning schools.

After retirement, he trained as a certified locksmith to supplement their retirement income. He always worked hard and got the little details right. He loved history, music, art, literature, movies, cars and bikes. He also loved the dramatic arts and making people laugh. He was a crowd favourite in countless dramatic productions over the years, even portraying a very convincing drunk several times despite never having touched alcohol. He loved words and always served with conviction as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the highlights of his church service was being a temple ordinance worker at the Cardston Alberta Temple for roughly 13 years. Hugh loved family history work and reminiscing on his treasured childhood memories as he told entertaining life stories to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.

Memorial services will be held in Raymond on May 16th, 2025, at the Knight Street Chapel at 11 am. Friends can greet the family at 10:15 am. Donations may be made to the Jack Ady Cancer Center at Chinook Hospital in lieu of flowers.
