On May 6, 2024, the gentle, yet larger than life soul of Darlene Larryette Andrews, aged 67, departed this world after years of health trials and numerous surgeries. She left behind a legacy of compassion, love, and unwavering kindness. Born on May 14, 1956, in Windsor, Ontario, to Lawrence William Johnson and Lillian Opal Vivian Ethel Rigby, Darlene's early life was fraught with adversity and hardship, growing up in an abusive home. At the age of 7, with the assistance of Child Services, Iola (Micky) and Donald (Bud) Rider welcomed Darlene into their home in Omemee, Ontario. Micky believed Darlene could become more than her circumstances and that with the right support, could have a better life.

At the age of 14, Darlene found great hope in her Saviour, being baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This led her to finding the love of her life in Gary William Andrews, whom she met in Toronto and married on March 19, 1977. A year later they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington DC temple. Together, they built a family and a home that became a haven for many. A devoted wife and mother, Darlene's door was always open, her table always set for one more (at least). Her life was a testament to the belief that love can transform lives—a belief she instilled through words and deeds.

Among her many acts of kindness, one that stands out occurred during her time in Ontario. Upon hearing of a single mother and her two young children living in their car out of a church parking lot, Darlene did not hesitate to welcome them into her family, providing shelter and stability until they could stand on their own. Her dedication to service was further exemplified at Christmas, when she led her family many times to the Mustard Seed in Calgary, to share the holiday spirit with the less fortunate, a tradition that deeply impacted her own family and those they helped.

Darlene's home was a sanctuary where over 40 foster children found safety and love, and countless others found a friend and mentor. She saw the good in everyone, especially in children and youth, believing firmly that everyone deserved a chance to feel valued and loved.

Darlene always had a deep love for music. She actively participated in church choirs and sang for years in significant productions such as Handel's Messiah. Despite not being able to read music, she served faithfully as Stake and Ward Music Chairperson and Ward Chorister, sharing her powerful voice at several temple dedications, stake conferences, and numerous other events. Her musical contributions enriched her community and home. She also served in various other leadership callings from primary and cub scouts to young women president.

Her passing is a profound loss not only to her family but to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her husband, Gary; her children and their spouses, Odessa (and Julian) Bondy, Jessica (and Matthew) Tatlow, Jacob (and Heather) Andrews, and Alexander (and Elise) Andrews; her cherished grandchildren; and a community enriched by her presence.

The Andrews family warmly invites you to attend her funeral service at the Cobblestone Lane Chapel at 27 Cobblestone Lane, Raymond, Alberta, on May 11, 2024. Viewing held at 10:00 am, followed by the service at 11:00 am.

"Never underestimate what you can do for another by simply loving them," Darlene often said, a reminder to us all of the power of compassion and the enduring impact of selfless acts.
