Daniel "M" Sommerfeldt was born March 19, 1942 in Cardston, Alberta, the second of four children. He grew up in Whiskey Gap, Alberta and B.C.. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Arizona Southwest Indian mission working with the Navajo from 1960 to 1962. He later went to BYU where he took Fine Arts and History and got his teaching degree. He worked as a teacher, substitute teacher, manager of the Grouse Mountain General Store, as well as working in the family post mill and other family businesses.


On August 12, 1978 he married the love of his life, Shirley May Neitz and became an instant Dad to 3 daughters, Lorraine (Duane) Jackson, Melanie (Don) Sommerfeldt, and Tammy Lestage. Dan and Shirley were then blessed with four more daughters Julie (Darian) Olsen, Elizabeth (Ray) Van Ee, Kathryn (Vince) Stastny, and Ashley McMurrin. He loved all 25 of his grandchildren (listed below) and 17 great grandchildren. He had a special bond with his grandson David Sommerfeldt as he and his mother lived with them in his early years.


Dan was predeceased by his parents Ferdinand Richard "Dick Sr." Sommerfeldt and Rhoda Beth Sommerfeldt and his older brother Richard E. "Dick Jr." Sommerfeldt, and his grandson Lucas Lestage. He leaves behind his brother Donald Kay (Melanie) Sommerfeldt and his sister Patricia (Ken) Tanner, and sister-in-law Pauline Sommerfeldt.


He passed away on May 25, 2025 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, surrounded by his children and many of his grandchildren. His loving wife, Shirley was by his side until he breathed his very last breath. The last words he said were "I love you, Shirley".

Julie's Children: Meagan Olsen, Caelin Olsen, Ethan Olsen, Samantha (Jamal) Olsen


Elizabeth's Children: Roderic Van Ee, Anyanka Van Ee


Kathryn's Children: Vaclav "Vince Jr." Stastny, Alzbeta "Beta" Stastny, Invictus Stastny


Ashley's Children: David Sommerfeldt, Sadee McMurrin, Logan McMurrin, Eli McMurrin


He was dearly loved by his children who all felt he was a wonderful father. He was also a cherished husband and a wonderful human. He will be dearly missed by his family and those he leaves behind.


A service will be held on June 2, 2025 at the LDS Stake Centre at 2 N 200 West, Raymond, Alberta. The viewing will be at 10:00 am followed by a service at 11:00 with a luncheon to follow. The interment will follow at the cemetery in Cardston, Alberta.
