McCRACKEN, MARIE ELVA
MARIE ELVA MCCRACKEN (nee Ireland) passed away peacefully on April 9, 2018 while in the care of Raymond General Hospital. Her family was fortunate to be with her on her 91st Birthday three days earlier.
Marie was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) in 2000. She is survived by her children Lesley (Glen) Jewitt, Robert, Peter, John (Carolyn), their sons Ryan and Cole, three Sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie had a vast curiosity about everything and was always exploring the back roads, learning about people places and things or learning a new hobby. Vancouver’s Expo86 was a magnet to Marie. The opportunity to experience so many countries was something Marie couldn’t miss. After an earlier visit to Expo with Bob and in-laws Marie and Harold, Marie drove to Vancouver three times by herself because she needed to learn as much as possible before Expo was over. For a centennial project a new interest in genealogy resulted in a large McCracken family tree and the first McCracken family reunion. Genealogy became her passion. When the “big city” girl (Toronto & Calgary) moved to a farm in the Glenwood area, Marie took rural life on as a challenge. A little rocky at first but she adapted well. Her greatest achievement, although not a passion, was being mid-wife to numerous ewes and nurse maid to hundreds of lambs. Well done Marie! While in Glenwood Marie was very active with the Glenwood Cemetery Committee. The history of the area always appealed to her. Years later Bob and Marie retired to Lethbridge. Shortly after Bob’s passing Marie took on another challenge and went on a mission for her LDS church. She was sent to Vancouver Island where she accomplished most of her goals and came home much richer in spirit from the experience.
In keeping with Marie’s wishes, a private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (Box 2211, Lethbridge AB T1J 4K7), Canadian Diabetes Assn. (#220, 6223 – 2 Street S.E., Calgary, AB, T2H 1J5) or charities of choice.
